Checkers embarked on a journey with Summit to train and upskill our Fresh Food Controllers and Fresh Food Managers in all our stores nationally.

We started with a pilot project in Gauteng and due to the success of this project we decided to roll out further in Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Free State and KwaZulu Natal for both Checkers and Shoprite in the Free State as well. We are confident that the training will uplift food hygiene in the kitchens, correct knife skills and reduce wastage. One of the chicken dishes used on training was implemented in a store and was sold out in one day. We are happy that Summit identified training that matches the specific needs of our staff and business goals and changed the Assistant Chef programme to suit our business requirements.

ePOE

An ePOE or electronic portfolio of evidence is a step that Summit is proud to take in order to constructively address the amount of paper that traditional portfolios of work would ordinarily use. In a business that relies a lot on POE’s, digitizing efforts is increasingly important if we want to stay ahead of the curve.The ePOE enables the learner to load their evidence via a web-based platform for formative and summative assessments. The platform notifies the assessor when the evidence is presented, thus allowing in-time assessments. As the assessor checks the submissions, the results are captured in the platform – enabling the learner access to their feedback without delay no matter where they are based. So, the learner does not need to wait to meet the assessor again before seeing their results. ePOE changes the way that we assess, making it easier for learners who can make use of audio and video as a mechanism to assess, versus just text-based input. This ensures that regardless of the written communication level of learners, assessors are able to determine whether the learner can perform the task. This means that there is a massive focus on assessing for competency which Summit believes leads to more employable (and gainfully employed) individuals.

Integrated Learnership and Traineeship Services

Learnerships are integrated and comprehensive learning programmes which lead to various qualifications registered on the National Qualifications Framework. Learnerships are directly related to a specific occupation or field of work. These one-year programmes are completed via a combination of block release (knowledge attainment and skills development), as well as work placement. Every month learners are released from their workplace in order to attend a week of theory and skills’ training with the training provider. A Portfolio of Evidence (POE) is then developed throughout the year with monthly formative assessments by learners. Learnerships are one of the most effective ways to achieve several business outcomes – raise your BBBEE score, upskill employees for enhanced business performance, and receive tax breaks.

Traineeships are regarded as ‘work-while-you-learn’ programmes which are comprised of work-integrated learning and theoretical study. The benefi ts for BBBEE-employers is the ability to claim the monthly stipend amount as a contribution towards the skills’ scorecard.

YES Initiative

YES is a business-driven initiative which is breaking new ground by encouraging a partnership with government and labour in order to collectively address a national plan to build economic pathways for black youth. When you participate in this initiative your business can gain one or two levels on your BBBEE scorecard. We strive to walk a close journey with you in this regard and our consultants are acutely skilled to advise on regulations, compliance and mitigation in terms of potential risks to your business. We also assist your business to address scarce skills within your sector by providing relevant training and placement if you are not able to absorb the learner back into your workforce.

Discretionary Grants

We assist businesses to apply for Discretionary Grants. Discretionary grants are aimed at encouraging stakeholders to contribute towards skills development. The bulk of discretional funding is directed at the provision of PIVOTAL or learning programmes.
